Subject:  Sprints and Shuttle Run:  Grades:  1-3 & 4-6

Objective (Standard):

 Students will develop fundamental movement skills that are associated with sprinting and the shuttle run.

Enduring Understanding: 

Students will participate in physical activity to achieve and maintain a healthy level of physical fitness.

Essential Questions: 

What fundamental movement skills would you associate with sprinting and the shuttle run?

How will participation in physical activity allow you to maintain a healthy level of fitness?

In what ways will we develop responsible and respectful personal and social behavior skills?

Day One:  Intro to proper techniques of sprinting and the shuttle run. 

Activity: 

1.      Students will find stretching spots and warm-up.

2.      Students do content reading activity on form running and complete worksheet.

3.      Instructor will demonstrate proper running form with the help of high school student helpers. 

4.      Running will be and ongoing lesson incorporated into the warm-up routine during our field day unit.  We will motivate students with a run across South Dakota Contest.  Each lap will equal one mile on our State Maps.  The classes that make up each grade level will have friendly competition to see which class can get across the state before the completion of our Track and Field Unit.

5.      The teams will compete in a group activity. (Run across the State).  .

6.      Self Assessment:  Students will evaluate their own times in the sprints.  Students will evaluate individual improvement in time. 

7.      Students will also learn how to operate the stopwatch for individual times of their partner.

8.      While the students are completing the formal peer assessment the instructor will use a check off observation sheet that tells whether each student improved, participated, and demonstrated sportsmanship.

9.      When all cooperative groups have completed the assessment and have returned to their spots, then the instructor will review the main points of sprinting and the shuttle run.

10.  Assess:  Speed (sprints), Quickness (shuttle runs)
